Archaeology Peru Overview

Explore the Southern Andes, a region with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in South America and a rich archaeological heritage.

The Vitor Archaeological Program looks at complex societies and the remains of their architecture, mortuary practices, and interactions with local environments.  The program is headquartered in the small town of Vitor, 40 kilometers west of Arequipa, a vibrant commercial and tourist Mecca at the southern part of modern Peru.

You'll conduct field work at the Vitor Valley, in sites covering over 2,000 years of human occupation. The arid climate has helped preserve all types of material including organic tissues, textiles, pottery, and food remains making the archaeological experience here one of the most rewarding anywhere.
