Archaeology Panama Location

Accommodations

Students will be mostly staying in hotels in Mexico City and Oaxaca City, and in local inns while traveling to the Mixteca and the Isthmus. All students will be sharing a room based on room size and availability.

UCLA Summer Sessions reserves the right to change the housing location. Should this become necessary, we will arrange comparable accommodations elsewhere.

Meals

Oaxacan food is a wonderful blend of European and indigenous cuisines, and dining there is usually a cultural experience in itself. Monday through Friday, breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided by the program. Students are responsible for their weekend meals.

Please let us know when you apply for this program if you have special dietary needs, as well as any medical or physical conditions. We will advise you accordingly.

Excursions

The general objective of this Travel Study program is to see, experience, and learn as much as possible in a short amount of time. Except for those days of classroom lectures, during the week there will be day-long excursions to archaeological sites, indigenous communities, historical monuments, museums, and research institutes. While many of these places are located in the city or within a short bus ride, others are found in remote and hard-to-reach places. You must be prepared to walk long hours, sometimes in hot weather or muddy terrain. We will spend our weekends in the beautiful and relaxing Oaxaca City, where students can do independent sightseeing in and around this tourist-friendly town.

This program has limited free time for independent sightseeing. Please consult with the faculty about independent travel during the program.
