The Kent/UCLA Field School on Late Roman Ostia
Italy
Summer 2010
Uncover the secrets of Ancient Rome through archaeological work in the nearby port city of Ostia, one of the best preserved and most-extensively excavated ancient cities in the Mediterranean basin. Although it was an important city throughout hundreds of years of Roman history, the city’s current appearance reflects the mid-imperial and late antique period in particular.
An ancient town long covered in sand, Ostia is an unforgettable destination. Within its streets you can find baths, restaurants, workshops and houses. Such structures are often preserved to a height of three stories and provide many insights into the now-obscured urban form of ancient Rome. You'll have the opportunity to work on an ongoing research project with direct involvement in excavation, survey, and laboratory duties.
