Timoleague Archaeological Project
Ireland
Summer 2010
Spend an unforgettable five weeks in beautiful southern Ireland uncovering the area's fascinating political past. You'll help excavate the ruins of the Cistercian monastery of Fons Vivus. Founded in 1172 by the local native Irish chieftain, its construction coincided with the invasion of Ireland by the English king, Henry II. A century later, the monastery was moved to a new site, two miles to the east. There is evidence to suggest that the original site of the monastery may have continued to function as a hospital and perhaps one that cared for lepers. After a week in class at University College Cork, you'll spend the remaining four weeks in the field where you'll participate in all aspects of excavation and site survey.
