Fayum Field School
Egypt
October 10 - November 16, 2008
Accommodations
Students will live in tents around the excavation headquarters, which contains laboratories, dining & lecture rooms, a kitchen, bathrooms and (hot) showers. Each tent will have two occupants. Tents, beds, blankets, sheets, and pillows are provided, but participants are expected to bring towels and a mosquito net. Detailed information on the very basic, but nevertheless comfortable living conditions will be sent out to participants.
UCLA reserves the right to change the housing location. Should this become necessary, we will arrange comparable accommodations elsewhere.
Meals
Sunday through Thursday, breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided in the excavation headquarters by the program. Students are responsible for their weekend meals.
Please let us know when you apply for this program if you have special dietary needs, as well as any medical or physical conditions. We will advise you accordingly.
Cultural adaptationSince the field school is based in a rural area of an Islamic country, all participants are required to adopt a number of simple rules while in the camp or in the field: dress modestly, do not socialize with members of the opposite sex and do not drink alcohol.
Safety
Persons who do not regularly travel to Egypt may have concerns about the safety of traveling in the Middle East. Although there have been isolated incidents of violence, Egypt is a very safe country. Americans are not targets of violence and in addition the expedition has 24 hour police protection.
Excursions
Several excursions are incorporated in the schedule (see above).
This program has limited free time for independent sightseeing during weekends. Please consult with the faculty about independent travel during, before or after the program.
