Archaeology-Chile Field Program Curriculum

Curriculum

Prerequisites: None

Required Course:
Archaeology C159 (Undergraduates): 12 quarter units
or

Archaeology C259 (Graduate Students): 12 quarter units

Please note that to receive graduate credit you must currently be a graduate student seeking either an MA or Ph.D. degree.  If you are currently an undergraduate student, or holding a BA/BS degree, you may enroll in the graduate level course work with instructor consent.  In addition to all other course requirements, students enrolled at the C259 level must submit a research paper in coordination with the project Faculty Director.

This course has two goals; 1) to introduce students to field methods in archaeology, and 2) to provide a practical working knowledge of survey, excavation, and field cataloging methods that will enable students to better understand how to do archaeology.

Grading

Undergraduate grading will be based on two quizzes (33%) and fieldwork participation (67%). Graduate student grading will be based on two quizzes (33%), fieldwork participation (33%), and one 15- 20 page paper (34%) on archaeological field methods.

Tuesday Morning: Orientation to Iquique. Guided walking tour of town
Afternoon Lecture: Indigenous Cultures of the Tarapaca Region”

Wednesday Morning Lecture: Archaeological Field Methods
Afternoon: Ceramic Drawings (1)

Thursday Morning: Independent Research Project

Friday Morning Lecture: Tarapaca Valley Project
Afternoon: Exam

Saturday: Explore Iquique on your own

Sunday Morning: Free
Afternoon: 3:00 p.m. Transfer to the Tarapaca valley

Weeks 2-5: Intensive survey and excavations at the Tarapaca valley.  Students will live in a modest field house at the site, and return to Iquique for the weekends and travel to field trips.

Friday, July 28:           Return to Iquique, finish field work

Saturday, July 29:     Return home or continue traveling.

Classes generally do not meet on Saturdays and Sundays.
