Pimu Island Archaeological Project
Catalina Island, California
June 22 - July 26, 2008

Archaeology Field Program Catalina Overview

Santa Catalina Island is an important hub for the intermingling of people and the exchange of ideas and objects. Surrounded by rich marine and lithic resources, the Santa Catalina (Pimu) Island peoples were contributors to an extensive trade network throughout southern and central California and the Southwest. This archaeological project allows students to study economic strategies and adaptations on one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific.

Students will conduct fieldwork on the Catalina Island, focusing on recent burn areas that will allow for the characterization of the different types of archaeological sites (e.g. habitation, quarry, village, ceremonial). Excavation will take place at a historic and prehistoric habitation site to recognize its attributes and determine California Register eligibility.  Students will have the opportunity to work on an ongoing research project with direct involvement in excavation, survey, and laboratory duties.  Lectures will be given by local experts, Tongva tribal members, and California archaeologists.

Scholarships: The UCLA Tribal Learning Community & Educational Exchange is funding five student scholarships for this program.  You can learn more about the scholarships here and download the application here.  The scholarship application is due March 3, 2008.

Additionally there are two more scholarships to support students participating on the Pimu (Catalina) Island Field School. Scholarships are available to both UC and non UC students. You can learn more about the Civalleri Catalina Island Scholarships by downloading the Scholarship Form.
