Travel

You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements.

Flying to Botswana: You cannot fly from North America directly to Botswana and you must instead go via South Africa (Johannesburg – O R Tambo International Airport). South African Airways fly directly to Johannesburg from Washington and New York. Alternatively, you can fly to Johannesburg via Europe. From Johannesburg you can take a connecting flight to the Botswanan capital Gaborone, with either South African Airways or Air Botswana. You can also fly direct to Maun from Johannesburg with Air Botswana, however this may be more expensive, and may require a stopover in Johannesburg.

Reaching Maun
: from Gaborone you can travel to Maun via bus (approximately 12 hours, leave every day) or fly with Air Botswana. However please note that Air Botswana flights often get booked up quickly and are limited in number. Please consult the Director closer to the course for specific travel advice. Students should arrange pick-ups in Maun airport/bus station with the Director in advance of arrival.

Visa Requirements

A passport with at least six months of validity remaining is required. U.S. citizens are permitted stays up to 90 days without a visa. Visitors to Botswana who also intend to visit South Africa should be advised that the passports of all travelers to South Africa must contain at least two blank (unstamped) visa pages each time entry to South Africa is sought.  For additional information on entry requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana.  There are honorary consuls in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston.  For more information, visit the US State Department Web site.
