Okavango Archaeological Research Project
Botswana
Summer 2010
Accommodations
Students will stay in the University of Botswana/HOORC tented camp in Maun. This camp has excellent facilities with communal space, kitchen and shower/ablutions block. Students will share large tents which all have electricity and a balcony. In addition, the facilities at HOORC are available for study (for example the library).
Meals
Food is provided Monday- Saturday (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Students are responsible for their own meals on Sundays.
Please let us know when you apply for this program if you have special dietary needs, as well as any medical or physical conditions. We will advise you accordingly.
Excursions
Two excursions are planned within the course. 1) a canoe trip into the Okavango Delta in week 1, which will include a game walk (tracking animals, e.g. elephant, ostrich, wildebeest); 2) a further weekend trip to the Tsodilo Hills UNESCO World Heritage Site will be planned during weeks 2-5, and will visit the famous rock art sites.
This program has limited free time for independent sightseeing. Please consult with the Director about independent travel during the program. The region has many areas of interest nearby, and students can easily travel to various game parks in the immediate vicinity (e.g. Moremi), or more further afield to other national parks (e.g. Chobe) or other visitor attractions (e.g. Makgadikgadi salt pans).
